School of Media and Design, Canadore College
2020
Project Scope
Design wall mural graphics that will benefit the programs that use the new space, and establish a confident new space for Canadore College’s School of Media.
Canadore Atrium - elevation
Context
A campus space that was appropriated for a modular classroom/meeting space for media arts students and faculty was in desperate need of interior design and functionality planning. The brief was to design a graphic artwork piece that would feel modern and trendy, but also stand the test of time to carry the space into the future for years to come.
The Atrium space before remodelling
Method
The college got it’s start in the 70s, so I thought it might be fun to give a modern nod to that. The use of the Canadore chevrons was the best asset to sue, and has proven very versatile in past design initiatives. The colour palette has both a functional and aesthetic balance. The space would be used by students for conducting interviews and other camera work, and the feature wall would serve as the backdrop. Research and interviews conducted with the TV / Broadcasting program revealed that red and blue communicate very well on camera. I also chose to bring in the colours that were already chosen for the new Steelecase furniture.

36.5’ x 8.25’ for hallway
Design process
Having defined the theme and the colour palette, the design process went very quickly. Approval process was tiered, beginning with the Associate Dean, then to the Director of Marketing, then to the President’s office. Approval was unanimous with no changes to the artwork.
Solution
The positive feedback on how the feature wall design has drastically improved the space has been overwhelming. It truly does help the space feel more modern and adds an interesting spin on the otherwise white/red/photography branding typically leveraged by Corporate, while not detaching from the college communications completely. The interviews and other live shows that have been shot in the space look great as well.
Results
The artwork is so beloved that was reproduced and installed in 2 additional spaces in the media arts department.
